How to Move Your Old Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts

Post your existing Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts without re-uploading by hand: which Reels to send first, how to avoid duplicates, and what to automate.

By Firdaosh Bano

You can move old Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts without downloading and re-uploading each one by hand. Connect Instagram and YouTube to a cross-posting tool, pick the Reels worth moving, review each title and visibility setting, and send them. Then turn on automatic publishing so every new Reel reaches YouTube without extra work.

Your back catalog is already proven content. Videos that did well on Instagram get a second chance in front of a different audience, and YouTube Shorts can keep surfacing them for months.

Step 1: Pick which Reels to move first

Don’t move everything. Sort your Reels by views or saves and start with:

  • Evergreen tutorials and tips that are still accurate.
  • Your top 10 to 20 performers, which have already shown the hook works.
  • Series content, so YouTube viewers can binge the whole set.

Skip Reels that:

  • Depended on a trend or sound that has faded.
  • Promote an expired offer or say “link in bio”, which means nothing on YouTube.
  • Use Instagram’s music library. Some don’t come with a shareable video file, and the music licence doesn’t carry over to YouTube.
  • Include other creators’ clips you don’t have the rights to reuse.

Step 2: Check each video works as a Short

YouTube Shorts are vertical or square videos up to three minutes long, which matches almost every Reel. Before sending, check that:

  • On-screen text isn’t covered by YouTube’s interface at the bottom and right edge.
  • The first second makes sense without the Instagram caption, because Shorts viewers often skip the description.
  • The audio is original or cleared for use outside Instagram.

Step 3: Rewrite the title for YouTube

Instagram captions are written for followers who already know you. YouTube titles need to say what the video is about in under 100 characters, ideally with the words someone would search for. “3 Canva shortcuts that save 20 minutes” beats “Day 47 of posting daily 🔥”.

Keep the Instagram caption as the description if it has useful detail, and remove Instagram-only lines such as “link in bio” or “comment GUIDE”.

Step 4: Send the Reels to YouTube

There are two ways to do this:

MethodBest forEffort
Download and upload by handA handful of ReelsDownload each file, open YouTube Studio, upload, and write the title. About 5 minutes per Reel
A cross-posting toolOngoing posting plus selected older ReelsPick a Reel, review the suggested title, and send. Under a minute per Reel

With SocialGrow:

  1. Connect Instagram, then connect your YouTube channel in Accounts with Google sign-in.
  2. Open Cross-posting and choose the destination channel.
  3. Click Choose a Reel and select an older Reel.
  4. Review the AI-suggested title, the description (your caption), and the visibility.
  5. Choose Post to YouTube, then check Cross-posting history for the result.

SocialGrow sends older Reels one at a time on purpose, so each one gets a title written for YouTube rather than a pasted caption. If you have hundreds of Reels and want them all moved in one batch, a bulk tool such as Repurpose.io handles that one-off transfer better. See our SocialGrow vs Repurpose.io comparison for the trade-offs.

Step 5: Spread the uploads out

Publishing 50 Shorts in one afternoon gives none of them a fair chance and can hit YouTube’s daily upload limits for your channel. Send a few a day, or mix one older Reel in alongside each new one. Set visibility to private or unlisted first if you want to check how a Short looks before it goes public.

Step 6: Automate every new Reel from now on

The back catalog is a one-time job. The bigger win is never having to think about it again. Turn on Auto-publish new Instagram Reels and every Reel you post on Instagram goes to YouTube Shorts automatically, with an AI-written title and your channel’s default visibility.

Add Skip rules for captions you never want on YouTube, for example sponsored or giveaway, so brand deals and Instagram-only campaigns stay where they belong.

Common problems

A Reel isn’t available to send

It may use Instagram library music without a shareable file. Use the original video file and upload it to YouTube directly, or re-edit it with original audio.

The Short uploaded but I can’t see it on my channel

Check the visibility. A private or unlisted Short uploads successfully but doesn’t appear publicly.

An upload failed with a quota error

YouTube limits uploads per day. The failure is recorded in your cross-posting history. Try again the next day rather than repeating it immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload my old Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts? +

Yes. Reels up to three minutes fit YouTube Shorts. You can download and re-upload each one by hand, or use a cross-posting tool that reads the Reel from Instagram and uploads it to your channel through YouTube's official API.

Will reposting my Reels on YouTube hurt either account? +

Posting your own original videos on both platforms is normal, and many creators do it. Avoid uploading content you don't have the rights to, such as Reels built on Instagram library music or clips from other creators, because YouTube applies its own copyright and reused-content rules.

Should I move all my Reels or only some? +

Start with your best performers and evergreen videos. Reels tied to a past trend, an expired offer, or Instagram-only features (like a 'link in bio' call to action) usually aren't worth moving.

Can SocialGrow move my whole back catalog at once? +

No. SocialGrow sends older Reels one at a time so you can review the title, description, and visibility of each, and it publishes new Reels automatically. If you need to transfer hundreds of past videos in one batch, a bulk tool such as Repurpose.io is a better fit for that one-off job.
